Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Time to Start Livin' (Episode 1)
I share my thoughts on Episode 1 of the Signed, Sealed, Delivered TV series.
Let’s recap Episode 1 of the Signed, Sealed, Delivered TV series. In the future, I may combine Episodes in a blog post but for now, each one has a separate post.
Season 1 Episode 1: Time to Start Livin’
“The postal detectives unravel a mystery behind a letter from a young boy whose life is in danger, as a legendary new supervisor challenges and inspires the team.”
Rating: 3.5/5 Dead Letters
Whew! What a great follow-up to the pilot movie! The stakes are high and the stories are deep! Not a cozy romance show but certainly what I consider a cozy mystery series!
Brief Recap
A lost letter to Grandma turns into outsmarting a drug cartel. How does that happen? Let’s unravel the mystery together!
The episode opens under the veil of night with Owen writing a letter to his Grandmother telling her of his surprise visit to her soon. He sneaks out at 9:00 pm to place the letter in the postal box. This scares his parents but they are still overjoyed at the return of their son. Unfortunately, the letter did not make it to his grandmother. Instead, it landed in the trustworthy hands of Oliver O’Toole and his team of POstables. Under the watchful eye of the new, legendary supervisor, Theresa, the POstables discover the little boy who wrote to his grandmother is in danger. They embark on a journey to discover where the grandmother lives and save Owen from falling into the hands of a drug cartel — that night. They have until 9:00 pm to find his grandmother and him before he sneaks out.
The POstable team located the Grandmother at Landimer Manor, a senior living facility. Vivian Lassiter is identified to be the grandmother but something is amiss when she vehemently denies knowing Owen or recognizing the contents and drawing of spoons. She seems to be in a hurry to get away from Donna, a worker at the facility. Donna is persistent in knowing the contents of the letter. Vivian sends Rita to her room to get her red sweater and she discovers a wind chime made of spoons. They soon learn Owen is Casey’s witness protection name. He witnessed a crime involving a notorious drug cartel and the prime witness. Shane uses her tech skills to determine Donna is a relative of the indicted member of the drug cartel.
With this new knowledge, the team hatches a plan to “break out” Vivian to try to stop Casey from running away. However, Donna is soon hot on their trail and even steals the letter from Vivian. Norman’s cousin, Wade, provides an empty house and Oliver places the wind chime in the apple tree by the road. Norman sets up a fake chemical leak at the school shortly before Donna shows up. Shane, Rita, and Vivian search for Casey’s real house and hope to stop him before sneaking out at 9:00 pm. The diversion works because Donna falls into the trap and right into the hands of the police. While riding in the car, Shane, Rita, and Vivian see police cars pass by and then see Casey at the corner. He follows the police and Shane is close behind. In the end, they outwit and outsmart Donna. Casey is reunited with his grandmother and they all enjoy dessert with the family.
My Thoughts
Dear POstables,
This episode was amazing and picked up right where they left off in the pilot movie. I enjoyed the darker, mysterious aspect of the show but the writers did a great job keeping it light-hearted at the same time. As we went on the journey with the POstables, I was completely enthralled by the mystery. I did not see the twist coming that Casey was actually in witness protection due to witnessing a cartel crime. My initial thought was that the two adults he lived with kidnapped him and he was writing to his grandmother to save him. WRONG! I like the version I saw better than what was in my head! Nevertheless, I was kept on my toes this episode and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Vivian was the star of the show for me because of the way she sneakily gave hints to the POstables. One of my favorite parts was the execution of breaking out Vivian and trapping Donna. Each person had a job to do allowing the sweet reunion between Casey and Vivian.
The side story with Arlene and Norman was sweet and I love that it was included in the episode. It was hilarious and fitting that Theresa filled in for Vivian in the play! The sad part of the episode is learning of Arlene’s passing after Norman receives her stamp collection. I was not prepared for that at all! Tears were shed. I am curious to see if the stamps come into play in future episodes.
